Understanding and Eliminating Incivility

Incivility is on the rise, specifically in the workplace, whether everyone may realize it or not, so what can we do to get people to acknowledge it and end it?

Sejal Thakkar discusses how to recognize acts of incivility, what to do if you witness such behavior, and how to understand what behavior is acceptable. By educating ourselves on incivility, we can help create a more respectful and welcoming work environment for everyone, and we can also use this knowledge outside of the workplace.

Conversations About Race

Some may find it difficult or uncomfortable to talk about race, but why does it seem this way? While it may come down to understanding the history or developing a common language to use, having conversations about race should be something we are not afraid of.

In this episode, April discusses the internalized conceptions we have about race, where they come from, and what we can do to alter or reframe them. Although we may not believe in the conceptions that have been passed down from generations, they are still ingrained in us, and it is up to us to educate ourselves in order to deviate from them.

Do you find yourself seeking external validation?

If so, what do you hope that person or group of people will tell you?

She said, “I was seeking external validation for my accomplishments because I didn't come up in a home where it was instilled in me … It was something I was always seeking … I realized that, ‘okay, if you do well in certain areas, this is how you’ll get certain types of validation’ … I have been operating off that until I was about 33 … I hit a ceiling professionally, and then also continued to recognize this void that I had, and I realized that I had to stop, and go inward to see where this was coming from … Once I started learning who I am and the things that I like …
